The cute little town of Rasnov, Romania with huge fortress looking down...... Rasnov Citadel. We fell in love with the countryside of Romania over and over on this trip!
First of all, what is a “citadel”? (Ash just asked me this today)
It’s a fortress or castle in or near a city. It’s intended to give the inhabitants a refuge in case of a siege from some enemy.

Courtyard of Rasnov...little shops in most of the buildings now, half have been fixed up, the rest is still in ruins....ongoing effort, but we loved how raw it was.
Rasnov Citadel is the largest peasant citadel ever built in Southern Europe, its ruins standing on top of a hill near Transylvania. It was built around the year 1215 by the Teutonic Knights and it was mentioned for the first time in 1331. It has resisted a great number of sieges and only opened its gates to the invaders once around 1600 AD, when the lack of water forced the defenders to give in. The 150 deep fountain inside the citadel tells a lot about this story of resistance.

Ghost Hunters International visited in early 2008. There have many reports of hauntings at the Rasnov Citadel.

This is was a totally unguided place, we were free to explore as we wanted, it was really fun.
This picture makes me laugh, as the guy was taking it, we could clearly see that he wasn't really looking at us, but HEY, at least we're all in the picture!
At the top of the city was a 360 degree panorama view of the area...spectacular!
There is a myth attached to Râşnov Fortress. During a particularly long siege of the fortress, the citizens of Râşnov were concerned about the lack of available fresh drinking water. Two Turkish soldiers, having been captured earlier, were put to the task of digging a well in the centre of the fortress. These two men were assured that they would be given their freedom once the well was completed. According to local legend, it took them 17 years to finish the well, but they were still killed afterwards. This famous well still sits in the centre of Râşnov Fortress, and is 143 metres deep.
